Be a bat bestie
Autumn in Middle Tennessee means sudden changes in temperature and dwindling insect activity, which can make this a challenging time for our bat friends. Bats in our area are only active when the temperature is around 60°F or above. When the temps drop in a short period of time, they can become stranded on the ground or other inhospitable area, unable to access warmth and food. If you see a grounded bat or one that has been in the same spot for over 24 hours, immediately contact Harmony Wildlife or your local rehabber for further instructions.
If you have bats roosting in unwanted areas, there are humane ways to evict them in warm months. However, there is no such thing as humane bat eviction during cold weather so please leave them be during hibernation season.
You can help bats year-round by avoiding pesticides and herbicides, leaving dead trees for roost sites and planting native plants that attract pollinators, which are staple foods for insectivorous bats.
It requires very little effort to be a friend to these adorable keystone species!
This darling evening bat came to Harmony Wildlife after being grounded in cold weather. She made a full recovery and was released!
